While septic systems come labelled under many different names, there are ultimately three types of systems on the market that your home may use.
Type 1 – Septic tank based systems A septic system that is based on a tank usually has one underground container for receiving and settling wastewater. When the wastewater enters this tank, the solids sink to the bottom as the sludge layer, while oils and fat float to the surface to produce a scum layer with graywater in the middle. These systems are full of anaerobic bacteria that breakdown the waste material. A well working system of this type can be expected to break down 50 to 60% of the solids. The graywater between the sludge and scum moves out of the tank into a disposal area and is absorbed into the soil. The scum and sludge stay in the tank and eventually need to be pumped when full Type 2 – secondary treatment systems Secondary treatment systems use oxygen to break down and treat the waste. This oxygen is injected by air pumps made by specialized manufacturers, such as Gast’s septic air pumps. The oxygen allows for the growth of aerobic bacteria, which break down waste materials at a very efficient pace. There are many types of secondary treatment systems, but ultimately they are more efficient than type 1 systems and produce cleaner and safe effluent. This is especially important in homes that are built on poor quality soil. Type 3 – secondary treatment systems for problematic sites Type 3 systems produce the cleanest effluent and are very good at reducing pathogens and eliminating odours. These systems use aerobic treatment processes to treat sewage and use an air pump to mix oxygen directly into the sewage. The wastewater is then disinfected using shock chlorination treatment or UV filtration, and sometimes also employ a sand filter. These types of systems are usually smaller than type 1 or 2 and are used for homes with poor or shallow soil or lack of space.

If you have an above ground septic riser, you may be looking for ways to conceal it or help it blend better into your landscaping. Luckily for you, there have been a few creative ways invented over the years to keep your septic tank accessible and your landscape eyesore free. 1. Use a birdbath Give your feathered friends someplace to play while making your yard more beautiful by using a birdbath to cover your septic riser. Decorate the riser cover If you don’t like the idea of covering your riser, consider decorating the cover itself. Paint it to match the color of your grass or use mosaic glass or bits of stone and glue to make your riser into a beautiful piece of art. Of course, be careful not to do any damage to the riser cover when embellishing it. 4. Plant something Use plants to help conceal your riser by planting a small, circular bed or raised plants around it. Keep in mind that the ground around the riser will be drier and should stay that way, so don’t plant any water hungry plants or plants with deep root systems. Look for native plants that require little maintenance so that you don’t have to dig around your riser. Wine terminology can be very confusing to new wine enthusiasts. You can guess the meaning of some terms but many words used to describe the wine can be confusing. We’ve already covered what acidity and dry means in context of wines. Let’s now explore what “body” means when it’s used to describe wines.
What is Body? It’s easy to determine the acidity and level of dryness in the wine because these two concepts focus on a single aspect. However, the body isn’t as easy to explain because it’s used to describe what the wine feels like in the mouth. There are several factors that contribute to the body of the wine and give it a distinctive feel. The body of the wine usually depends on the alcohol content in it. Wines with higher alcohol content feel viscous in the mouth and become heavier. Wines over 13.5% alcohol content are generally considered heavy bodied and you will certainly feel the weight of them on your palate. Medium bodied wines have lower alcohol content and are easier on the palate. The alcohol levels range from 12.5% to 13.5% so you’ll feel some weight on the palate but it won’t be as heavy and viscous. Light bodied wines are perfect for newcomers and amateur wine enthusiasts. They have a lower alcohol content of less than 12.5% and are usually crisp and fruity. Wines are usually divided into three distinct body types • Light Body – The most common light body wines are Pinot Noir, Gamay, Riesling, and Prosecco. • Medium Body – The most common medium body wines are Zinfandel, Merlot, Sangiovese, and Barbera. • Heavy Body – The most common heavy body wines are Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Malbec, and Dolcetto, It’s a good idea to start out with light body wines and work your way up to fuller bodied drinks. You should also label wines with different bodies with personalized tags so you can easily identify them. If you’ve finally decided to buy a good quality, offset smoker, it’s important that you learn how to maintain your grill so that you get the best quality meats every time.
While some people may suggest that greasy grates and thick carbon buildup on the lid improve the depth of flavor of your food, we can assure you that it’s the opposite. Rancid grease and scale aren’t flavors we would add to any of our meats. Burning grease will also produce an acrid smoke that can destroy the taste of your meat and the threat of a grease inferno is very real when dealing with a dirty grill. To prevent your good grill from going bad, it’s important to do a light cleaning before each cook up and then, once a year, a deeper clean and maintenance routine. If you use your smoker a lot, do a thorough cleaning two to three times per year and before you store it for the winter months. First off, clean your grill grates. The grease and oils that drip onto your grates from the meat goes rancid quickly in hot weather and will make your meat taste awful. Grease on the bottom of the grates can also vaporize and flavor the meat, so be sure to clean them top and bottom. Make sure to check your smoker’s manual that came with it to make sure you don’t use any products you shouldn’t. If your grates have a thick, black crust it’s most likely carbon. This can flake off onto the meat and also act as an insulator, which will play with your temperature levels: a huge no-no. Some sites and even manuals will tell you to cover the grates with tin foil and crank up the heat. The theory behind this is that the reflected heat will carbonize everything. What this actually can do is block ventilation; forcing the hot air out through the knob holes and that could melt plastic dials and flexible hoses, warp metal, and crack ceramics. If you have scale to get rid of, scrape it off and vacuum it up using a plastic putty knife on a cold grill. Be aware that this can cause some gross liquid and flaking under your grill, so lay down a cloth before getting started. Game of Thrones is an immensely popular television series that airs on HBO. The science behind beer brewing is lengthy and worthy of many books, apprenticeships and even diplomas, but if you’re keen on getting a basic understanding of what happens when you home brew your own beer, we’ll give you a quick rundown.
The ingredients There are four basic ingredients that every beer must contain: hops, yeast, malt and water. Hops provide a lot of the basis for your beer’s flavor. It counteracts the sweetness in the beer by providing a heaping dose of bitterness. You don’t need many hops in your beer, even if you are making a potent IPA. Malt is a grain prepared for brewing in what is known as the malting process. Malt provides the sugar that the yeast will consume and therefore determines the strength of the beer. Most homebrewers don’t malt their own barley; they often just purchase it or use malt extract. Yeast consumes the malt to and converts the unfermented beer (this is called wort) into beer. Water is what beer contains the most of. Most beers are actually 90% water by volume. If your tap water is gross, consider using spring water since the taste of the water used will greatly affect the beer. The process Like the ingredients, there are also four steps to brewing your beer. Malting is the initial process of converting raw materials into beer. While most home brewers will leave the malting process to maltsters, it’s an important step in beer making. The grains are first allowed to germinate, which permits naturally occurring enzymes to activate. The grains are then dried with heat (called kilning), which allows the grains to be stored long-term and lets the flavors and aromas of the malt develop, that will then get extracted in the brewing process. Mashing is when the malted grains are soaked in hot water, which dissolves the starch molecules in the hot liquid and the enzymes. The enzymes break the starch molecules into smaller molecules of sugar. This sugar is called maltose and this malt sugar is what the yeast consumes. If you’re home brewing with malt extract, this step has already been completed for you. Malt extract is made from the mash, which is then condensed into a syrup or powder. Boiling (and cooling): the mixture of malt, water and other substances is called wort. Before wort can be fermented, it must be boiled to help sanitize it and make it a more stable product to work with. It’s during the boil that the hops are added and bitter compounds are extracted from them. The wort is then cooled so that the yeast can be added. Fermenting (and conditioning): once the wort is cooled and the yeast is added, fermentation begins. For homebrewers making an average-strength beer, this may take only a few days. Stronger and more complex beers can require much longer fermentation processes. After the beer had fully fermented and conditioned (if necessary) it is ready to be bottled and served. Catching the latest episode of Game of Thrones over a bowl of butter-infused popcorn sounds like the perfect recipe for a lazy Sunday afternoon. But what if your relaxation time was interrupted by a phone call from the next door neighbor? While you were mesmerized by the dramatic plotline of Daenerys Targaryen, it seems as though a troubling predicament of your own was brewing. Your neighbor informs you that your backyard has transformed into a swimming pool of sewage. The beautiful pink carnations that you spent a fortune on are now sodden and brown. What a mess.
Whether your teenage son has been dumping un-flushable objects down the toilet or you’re guilty of emptying an excessive amount of harmful chemicals into your drain, you need to get your septic system back in prime working condition as soon as humanly possible. This, of course, is an extreme example of how septic failure can have dire consequences on both your wallet and the safety of the environment. Besides routine maintenance like inspections, pumping, and monitoring the household’s disposal habits, you might want to consider installing a septic air pump aerator. A septic aerator pump, like the Medo LA-80B, introduces aerobic bacteria into the tank for optimal treatment of wastewater. Highly coveted in the marketplace, the LA-80B is a cost-effective solution for a malfunctioning septic pump and erases the need for a complete replacement of the original pump. The pistons are coated with Teflon, which prolongs the life of the pump and reduces adhesion of waste produce. With proper installation and occasional maintenance, the LA-80B has a life expectancy of five to eight years. As one of the newer models in it’s class, the Medo is engineered to expend a mere 50-60% of electrical current demands typical of diaphragm pumps. The high-quality construction is virtually noise-free and designed to handle even the most frequently used septic systems. Avoid missing out on any mind-boggling Game of Thrones cliff-hanger’s and ensure your septic system is equipped with the unmatched LA-80B. If you’re living in an apartment or a small home, finding extra space for an office is not just a luxury; it can be darn near impossible. Closet offices allow you to have a dedicated workspace without taking up a lot of real estate and let you tuck away your work when it’s not needed. But how do you stop yourself from feeling like you’re—well—working in a closet?
Skip the doors and go for a curtain Nothing will make you feel more hemmed in than having two folding doors looming on either side of you as you type away. Instead, remove the doors and use two high-quality curtain panels to section off your space when you’re not working. Get some color in there Staring at the back of the closet won’t do much for your creative brain, so paint that back wall or put up some fun wallpaper. We love the new trend of textured or metallic wallpapers or some deep, jewel-toned paint colors to really brighten up a space. Get creative with your storage A closet doesn’t give you much room to store things, apart from your desk and chair, so look to layer shelving over that freshly painted or wallpapered wall or install some wall mounted file organizers to keep all your papers and projects in place. Let there be light! Banish the little dome light that most closets come equipped with (if they have any light at all) and swap it out for something fun and unique. We love the idea of a small chandelier or a pendant light that throws neat shapes. For task lighting, look to have at least two lamps on your desk so that you won’t start nodding off in the dark or be forced to squint to see your work. |
