If you’re living in an apartment or a small home, finding extra space for an office is not just a luxury; it can be darn near impossible. Closet offices allow you to have a dedicated workspace without taking up a lot of real estate and let you tuck away your work when it’s not needed. But how do you stop yourself from feeling like you’re—well—working in a closet?
Skip the doors and go for a curtain Nothing will make you feel more hemmed in than having two folding doors looming on either side of you as you type away. Instead, remove the doors and use two high-quality curtain panels to section off your space when you’re not working. Get some color in there Staring at the back of the closet won’t do much for your creative brain, so paint that back wall or put up some fun wallpaper. We love the new trend of textured or metallic wallpapers or some deep, jewel-toned paint colors to really brighten up a space. Get creative with your storage A closet doesn’t give you much room to store things, apart from your desk and chair, so look to layer shelving over that freshly painted or wallpapered wall or install some wall mounted file organizers to keep all your papers and projects in place. Let there be light! Banish the little dome light that most closets come equipped with (if they have any light at all) and swap it out for something fun and unique. We love the idea of a small chandelier or a pendant light that throws neat shapes. For task lighting, look to have at least two lamps on your desk so that you won’t start nodding off in the dark or be forced to squint to see your work.
